Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard

By dktc on Nov 17, 2008 | In Travel | Send feedback »

The Big Bang Theory cracks me up. Why? Because:

Scissors cuts Paper
Paper covers Rock
Rock crushes Lizard
Lizard poisons Spock
Spock smashes Scissors
Scissors decapitates Lizard
Lizard eats Paper
Paper disproves Spock
Spock vaporizes Rock
Rock crushes Scissors

Winding Down

It's been a wild few weeks. A second (road) trip to Florida proved to be a little less warm and a little more cloudy than my previous adventures in the Sunshine State. All went well and problem-free so I really couldn't complain. I returned to fair weather which I was thankful for, having not packed a jacket.

New York, on the other hand, was a near disaster. I arrived 45 minutes before my seminar was to begin, only to learn I did not have the proper attire. It turns out, the seminar was being held in a private club. It was a humiliating (humbling?) battle, but I was eventually let in. It was a mistake I will not make again. It was also a fairly long day, beginning when I left at 4:30am and ending when I pulled in at 9:30pm.

My goal is to be a little more subdued this weekend. Aside from an impromptu night out last night, I've been pretty low key. Next weekend will be quite the contrary when I will be going to several parties. In the meantime? I think I might watch a little first season of The Big Bang Theory again. And perhaps ponder over purchasing a few new coats.

Packing

Tomorrow I begin my cross-country road trip. The goal is to drive as long as physically possible in an attempt to drive for only two days. I have planned to be unsuccessful and require 3-4 days. Just in case. Tonight I pack a small bag with only a couple of days worth of clothing. The problem will be going from a cold climate to a warm one. I suppose skirts are the solution to everything in that case.

Barred

This past weekend I ended up on two ends of the spectrum of the bar life. Friday I drank until I was fuzzy, only noticing the person I was with and the bartender who I hadn't seen in months. Hanging out one-on-one with a guy at a bar prevents what happened the following night.

Saturday night it was just me and a female friend out at a local bar. After landing a spot actually at the bar, we were flanked by two very drunk men. Their version of "picking up" women is to bump into them. Literally. Over and over and over until the women look at them. Even after making myself completely clear that I was not interested (although I could have been meaner, I was a little too shocked at how ridiculous he was to lash out), one of the gentlemen proceeded to lean into me. Multiple times. The pair tried their moves on every woman in the bar. They failed every time. In fact, they were snickered at and made fun of at every turn. And yet somehow they believed they were smooth. How sweet it must be to be that oblivious.

CSS Amazement

As I mentioned before, I attended Create Chaos, where I obtained first-hand accounts of the likings of notables such as Colin Smith, Sandee Cohen, Dr. Woohoo, and David Blatner. It was a melting of various conferences and an overload of information. I managed to learn more than I thought I could and to get re-inspired.

On the last day, there was supposed to be a seminar on Art in Gaming. I had plans to go to this since the moment I saw it on the list. Sadly, it was one of the canceled talks, so I was left to choose between several seminars that I didn't find entirely interesting. The results? I attended "Empowering CSS: An Imaginative Use of Styles", put on by Christopher Schmitt. I had seen the name on several reference books but it didn't connect until I was actually in the seminar. And I have never been so entertained by one persons nerdiness. He built an American flag in CSS complete with the stars linking to all 50 states and the stripes linking to all 13 colonies. Done in CSS. Completely scalable. Really. Did I mention it was done completely in CSS? It's a week later and I still can't get over this nerdiness. I barely use CSS, never mind have the understanding and patience to build a completely linkable, scalable American flag. And I think the blue behind the stars even linked to the U.S.A.'s web site. What a crazy crazy man.
